What is OSHC (Overseas Student Health Cover) and why do I need it?
A while back I was discussing the subject of “International Students Health Cover” with one of the OSHC Providers and they immediately focused on the health system in Australia. “To study abroad in Australia, students are rewarded for having a good education system, however, we’re not ready for asking a good question related to student’s health,” they pointed out.
Which may explain why OSHC is mandatory for international students. This also came upon the government website about the OSHC Fact Sheet. Interesting fact cited that there are exceptions from the requirement of OSHC apply to students are:
- Norwegian students covered by the Norwegian National Insurance Scheme;
- Swedish students covered by Kammarkollegiet; and
- Belgian students covered under the Reciprocal Health Care Agreement with Australia.
Which raises an interesting question:
The answer is YES because any Medicare coverage you are entitled to will be in addition to OSHC. It means having Medicare does not exempt you from needing to purchase the OSHC.
